Director, Supply Chain

Summary

Responsible for directing the efficient and compliant performance of the Company's Supply Chain operation;  including , among other activities, production scheduling, raw material, API and general supplies purchasing, receiving, storage, shipping, inventory control, sales and operational planning activities.

 

Manage and control all phases of activities related to the efficient purchasing, warehousing, production scheduling, and distribution of finished goods pharmaceutical products and materials to satisfy the requirements of the Company, while delivering a high level of service and regulatory compliance.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive formal and informal leadership to promote a positive work environment and communicate overall business expectations to working groups.
  • Serve as primary Company liaison with Zydus USA and India on all supply chain and strategic sourcing matters, including Sales and Operational Planning matters. Accordingly, is responsible for all master scheduling/planning, receiving, shipping, freight, and logistical matters spanning multiple plants.
  • Responsible for the sourcing of materials/products and services to support the Company's pharmaceutical, R&D and administrative operations. This includes negotiating optimal pricing, delivery and technical support levels with vendors.
  • Work closely with Quality, R&D and Operations personnel to establish quality and operational specifications/expectations on all products and services to be acquired.
  • Identify and select qualified vendors; issue and evaluate responses to RFP's; issue purchase orders, and work with vendors to confirm shipment and delivery information.
  • Track vendor performance criteria, cost model structures, risk analysis, and overall supplier quality measures. Initiate and coordinate activities and projects with suppliers to reduce cycle times, raw material expenditures and other associated costs.
  • Lead the Manufacturing and Quality personnel to develop production schedules which meet customer demand and maintain targeted inventory levels.
  • Direct employees of Supply Chain; assign projects, review work product as necessary, and manage individual and team performance/development.
  • Build and maintain a staff of professional, highly motivated and knowledgeable individuals. Participate in selection of personnel and provide for their effective and thorough training. Establish standards of performance in accordance with company guidelines and evaluate performance against those standards for all staff members, to include preparing and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Work with IT management and production to initiate, improve and integrate automated systems to track purchase orders, manage inventories and track vendor-related activities, and plant scheduling.
  • Work with Engineering and Manufacturing personnel within Operations to perform product capacity assessment and planning.
  • Serve as a resource to R&D for sourcing of raw materials, components and other supplies for new product development.
  • Responsible for administration of the preventive maintenance program for all powered industrial trucks, fork lifts and hand walkers.
  • Identify and lead the implementation of Continuous Improvement projects within the Supply Chain organization.
  • Adhere to all cGMPs, OSHA, compliance/regulatory mandates and quality requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to meet departmental and Company objectives.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and experience with LEAN/Six Sigma quality improvement techniques.
  • Solid understanding of pharmaceutical packaging components, excipients and active pharmaceutical ingredients, including controlled substances.
  • Knowledge of standard distribution and warehouse practices, including receiving, order filling, packing, lot control, expiration dating, manifest operation, material handling, and return goods processing among others.
  • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively lead, influence, collaborate, and work with diverse teams and individuals at all levels throughout the organization.
  • Highly organized with strong project management skills to effectively manage multiple priorities, projects and requirements in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively communicate in a clear, concise manner whether in oral, written or presentation form.
  • Proficient computer skills with heavy emphasis on Windows-based PC programs.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple group efforts within the Company to achieve objectives.
  • Ability to identify processes needing improvement, and to recommend improvements.
  • Ability to be proactive and continuous-improvement focused. Strategic in thinking.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline or the equivalent in education and pertinent, progressive experience with increased levels of responsibility.
  • At least 10 years' progressive experience in purchasing within the pharmaceutical, chemical or technical manufacturing industry, with specific experience in managing supplier relations.
  • Proven experience in negotiation with solid track record meeting substantial material cost reduction targets.
  • NAPM (APPCPM), APICS (CPIM, CIRM) or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
