Senior Buyer - Pharmaceuitcals

Sr. Buyer summary

Perform a variety of purchasing responsibilities to include the procurement and negotiation of raw materials, packaging components, R&D materials and/or MRO parts and services. Develop purchase orders and work with vendors to confirm shipment and delivery information. Establish contractual agreements, source materials and services for new product development and engineering/maintenance projects. Lead internal and external clients in the identification and development of cost effective alternatives.

 

Sr. Buyer essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Negotiate purchase contract prices, delivery, and conditions for the purchase of a variety of assigned commodities including products of a non-standard or technical nature.
  • Ensure supply sources are capable of meeting and exceeding quality expectations, while ensuring adequate capacity, on-time delivery, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Select sources by conducting purchasing commodity surveys, interviews, supplier facility surveys, and scorecards.
  • Develop trend analysis, source identification/selection, total cost reductions, supplier performance criteria, cost model structures, risk analysis, and supplier quality.
  • Facilitate cross-functional support for strategic purchasing decisions.  Work closely with design engineering, manufacturing engineering and quality engineering teams in the development of product and suppliers.
  • Develop purchase orders and work with vendors to confirm shipment and delivery information.
  • Establish contractual agreements, source materials, services and engineering/maintenance projects, and work with clients to develop cost effective alternatives.
  • Analyze existing inventory with business needs and make decisions to maximize profitability without compromising efficiency.
  • Communicate with relevant departments regarding their purchasing needs; make suggestions regarding alternate vendors, pricing, etc.  Where needed, challenge internal personnel regarding timing or quantity of purchases, to maximize profitability and efficiency of the business.
  • Monitor vendor contracts and performance management; recommend necessary action to improve performance when necessary.
  • Initiate and coordinate activities and projects with suppliers to reduce cycle times, raw material expenditures and other associated costs. Work with key suppliers to leverage purchasing volume to minimize the number of suppliers, thereby lowering costs.
  • Work on problems of broad scope in which analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Recommend changes to related standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Adhere to all cGMPs, compliance/regulatory mandates and quality requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to meet departmental and Company objectives.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of standard purchasing practices, with excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively work with an array of different departments and outside vendors.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills with ability to successfully manage multiple priorities in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Effective communication skills to communicate in a clear, concise manner whether in oral, written or presentation form.
  • PC proficiency using Microsoft Office.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field; or the equivalent in pertinent, progressive experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Minimum seven years' purchasing experience; preferably in a pharmaceutical, chemical or technical manufacturing environment.
  • Strong background in negotiation and managing supplier relations.
  • Related professional certification, such as APICS, CPM, CPIM, CPP, and CPSM desired.
